AI assistants, API keys and MCP
Let an assistant like Claude set up and run your company through the API.
Backflow Base is built so an AI assistant can do the setup for you. An assistant can sign a company up, set prices, invite testers, schedule jobs, look up customers and send filings. It can never turn test mode off. Going live stays the owner's decision.
How to make an API key
- Go to Settings → Company.
- Find AI assistants and API keys.
- Type what the key is for (for example "Claude") and click Make a key.
- Copy the key straight away. The app says Copy this key now — it won't be shown again.
- Give the key to your assistant. It sends the key with every request, in the header
Authorization: Bearer <key>.
A key acts as the person who made it, for this one company only. The list under the form shows each key's name and when it was last used.
How to stop a key
Click Revoke next to the key. It stops working at once.
Connect an assistant over MCP
MCP is the easiest way for an assistant to use Backflow Base. The server is:
https://app.backflowbase.com/api/mcpFor Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http backflow-base https://app.backflowbase.com/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <key>"The tools cover the company profile and promo codes, the team, phone setup, water districts, customers, the schedule and filings.
Let an assistant sign you up
An assistant with no key can create a company for you. You get an email with a link to sign in and take the company over. Until you do, only the assistant's key can act for the company. This does not work with an email that already has an account. In that case, sign in and make a key as above.
Reference for assistants
- llms.txt: what an assistant needs to know, in one page. Point your assistant at it first.
- OpenAPI spec: every REST endpoint.
- Your company's own website can send bookings and business requests into Backflow Base through the API. See Your booking page.
What an assistant can't do
An API key can't turn test mode off, and it never has platform-admin rights. Everything it does is checked against your membership, the same as when you sign in.
